Drugs and Chemicals /  C   Calcifediol (Calderol, Dedrogyl, Hidroferol)

The major circulating metabolite of vitamin D3 (Calciferol). It is produced in the liver and is the best indicator of the body's vitamin D stores. It is effective in the treatment of Rickets and Osteomalacia, both in azotemic and non-azotemic patients. Calcifediol also has mineralizing properties.

References:

  • Rickets
A condition caused by deficiency of Vitamin D, especially in infancy and childhood, with disturbance of normal ossification. The disease is marked by bending and distortion of the bones under muscular action, by the formation of nodular enlargements on the ends and sides of the bones, by delayed closure of the fontanels, pain in the muscles, and sweating of the head. Vitamin D and sunlight together with an adequate diet are curative, provided that the parathyroid glands are functioning properly.

Fortification of orange juice with vitamin D: a novel approach for enhancing vitamin D nutritional health
Fortification of milk with vitamin D may not be adequate for satisfying the vitamin D requirement because of variability in vitamin D content after fortification and because many persons have milk allergy or lactose intolerance. Additional foods need to be fortified with vitamin D.

Too little vitamin D in premenopausal women: why should we care?
Nesby-O'Dell et al. report compelling data that provide irrefutable evidence that vitamin D deficiency is a major unrecognized epidemic in adult women of childbearing age (15–49 y). Not surprisingly, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 42% in African American women and 4.2% in white women.
