A thiazide diuretic with actions and uses similar to those of hydrochlorthiazide. It has been
used in the treatment of familial hyperkalemia, hypertension, edema, and urinary tract disorders.

Pharmacologic Action
Thiazide Diuretic
Diuretics characterized as analogs of 1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxide. All have a
common mechanism of action and differ primarily in the dose required to produce a given
effect. They act directly on the kidney to increase
the excretion of sodium chloride and water and also increase excretion of potassium ions.
Antihypertensive Agent
Drugs used in the treatment of acute or chronic hypertension regardless of
pharmacological mechanism. Among the antihypertensive agents are diuretics
(especially thiazide diuretics), adrenergic beta-antagonists; adrenergic
alpha-antagonists; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors;
calcium channel blockers; ganglionic blockers; and vasodilator agents.
