A monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic originally isolated from Chromobacterium violaceum.
It is resistant to beta-lactamases and is used in gram-negative infections, especially
of the meninges, bladder, and kidneys.
It may cause a superinfection with gram-positive organisms.
