Augmentin ®
Generic : Amoxicillin / Potassium Clavulanate
A fixed-ratio combination of
amoxicillin trihydrate,
an aminopenicillin,and potassium clavulanate,
a beta-lactamase inhibitor, used
to treat a broad-spectrum of bacterial infections, especially resistant strains.
Active Ingredients :
Amoxicillin
A broad-spectrum semisynthetic antibiotic similar to
ampicillin
except that its resistance
to gastric acid permits higher serum levels with oral administration.
Clavulanic acid
Clavulanic acid and its salts and esters. The acid is a suicide inhibitor
of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes from Streptomyces clavuligerus.
Administered alone, it has only weak antibacterial activity against most organisms,
but given in combination with beta-lactam
antibiotics prevents antibiotic inactivation by microbial lactamase.
Inactive Ingredients (Tablets):
Colloidal silicone dioxide,hypromellose,magnesium stearate,microcrystalline cellulose,polyethylene glycol,
sodium starch glycolate,titanium dioxide
Pharmacologic Action :
>Anti-Bacterial Agent
>Enzyme Inhibitor
>Combined Antibiotic
Anti-Bacterial Spectrum :
Gram - Positive Aerobes :
>Staphylococcus aureus
Gram - Negative Aerobes :
>Enterobacter species
>Escherichia Coli
>Haemophilus Influenzae
>Klebsiella Species
>Moraxella Catarrhalis
Anaerobes :
>Bacteroides Species
>Fusobacterium Species
>Peptostreptococcus Species
- Use in Dentistry :
Treatment of odontogenic and non-odontogenic orofacial infections,
broadens the spectrum to staphylococcus and other
(predominantly peptostreptococcus, fusobacterium, or bacteroides)
