Additional comments : The term "ranula" is derived from the Latin word "rana" (meaning frog) and is descriptive of the blue, translucent swelling in the floor of the mouth. MJ Davison, RP Morton, NP McIvor - Head & Neck, 1998 A plunging ranula is a cystic mass in the submandibular area arising from an occluded sublingual gland. Fluid from the obstructed gland dissects between the fascial planes and muscle of the base of the tongue to the submandibular triangle. Charnoff SK, Carter BL. Radiology. 1986 Feb;158(2):467-8. Ranula is a retention cyst of the sublingual gland, which, with progressive enlargement, may rupture and extend into the surrounding soft tissues as a pseudocyst. Ranulas have classically been divided into simple and diving on the basis of the sublingual space, their site of origin. Simple ranulas remain confined to the sublingual space, whereas diving ranulas extend beyond it.
