| latex allergy |
Allergic reaction to products containing processed natural rubber latex such as rubber gloves, condoms, catheters, dental dams, balloons, and sporting equipment. Both T-cell mediated and IgE antibody-mediated allergic responses are possible.Delayed hypersensitivity results from exposure to antioxidants present in the rubber;immediate hypersensitivity results from exposure to a latex protein. Additional comments : (Latex Hypersensitivity, Rubber Allergy) Latex hypersensitivity is a well documented phenomenon most commonly reported in children with spina bifida during surgical and other procedures involving exposure to latex. Schneck FX, Bellinger MF. J Urol. 1993 Aug;150(2 Pt 2):687-90. The most common clinical presentation of latex allergy is a nonimmunologic, irritant dermatitis of the hand. Contact dermatitis (type IV delayed hypersensitivity reactions to rubber additives) is the most common immunologic manifestation of latex rubber allergy.Type I allergic responses are less common and include contact urticaria, rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, and anaphylaxis. Seven percent to 10% of health care workers regularly exposed to latex and 28% to 67% of children with spina bifida have a positive skin test result to latex proteins indicating increased blood levels of IgE antibody. GL Sussman, DH Beezhold - Ann Intern Med, 1995 Natural rubber latex allergy is responsible for a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms, ranging from rhinoconjunctivitis to severe anaphylaxis, in both adults and children. An association between allergy to latex and allergy to various fruits has been reported. Novembre E, Bernardini R, Brizzi I, Bertini G, Mugnaini L, Azzari C, Vierucci A. Allergy. 1997 Jan;52(1):101-5. Latex allergy is thought to be responsible for 70% of anaphylactic reactions occurring in anesthetized children. F Porri, M Pradal, C Lemiere, J Birnbaum, JL Mege, … - Anesthesiology, 1997 In children with spina bifida, bladder exstrophy and posterior urethral valves, as well as in health care workers, latex allergy is common. A Chen, R Cremer, X Baur - The Journal of Urology Several case reports showed that latex allergy is often accompanied by sensitization to foods like banana, avocado, chestnut and kiwi. A Posch, Z Chen, M Raulf-Heimsoth, X Baur - Clin Exp Allergy, 1998 Latex allergy is frequently seen in health care workers, rubber industry workers and subjects undergoing multiple surgical procedures in early infancy. H Breiteneder, S Sowka, S Wagner, M Krebitz, C … - International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 1999 |
